Sunday 13.1.2008
Today I was very happy. I got a multitool. I was waiting for it for a few days. I got it because I had a 5 in math. That was on Friday. The multitool can open cans, it’s got a knife, a saw, a screw driver, a file, combination pliers and a few more things that I don’t know what their names are and what they are for.
Mark, my brother, got an electric dart target. We played with our presnts all day: we made dart throwing contests, played making something and all lots of things you can do with that kind of stuff.
It was a very nice and happy day, wasn’t it?
Monday 14.1.2008
Today it was boring. I know that we are going skiing tomorow but today... big bore. Nothing cool to write about nothing to read, just nothing to do.
But I’m happy to know that something fun and interesting is going to happen tomorow. Skiing is very fun. You go down the hill with great speed even if sometimes (if you go to fast) you fall on your bottom, it’s real fun.
Tuesday 15.1.2008
Today our family went to the moutains.
We had a nice ride. We listend to music, talked. It was fun. We got to the mountains at 8.00pm.
We are staying at our friends house for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We’re going to go back home on Saturday.
We are going to go skiing tomorrow, because today it’s too late and too dark.
We watched „The Rattatuille”. It was very funny. It was about a genius mouse that could cook and the clumsy son of G. Gusto the great cook.
Wednesday 16.1.2008
Today we went skiing. It was very cool. First I rode on the little hill called „baby lift”, but after a few rides I went on the big hill called „Kiczera”. I fell a few times and was so tired that I went back on the „baby lift”.
After that, I went to the restaurant and ate some meat with salads and drunk hot chocolate.
Then I went skiing again. I rode until 4.00pm and rode back home.
It was a cool day.
Thursday 17.1.2008
Today anything new.
We went skiing and came back at 6.00pm.
We watched „Herbie, super car”. It was about a girl called Megan Peyton who loved riding in cars and bought a car called Herbie, and they won Grand Prix.
Friday 18.1.2008
Today again nothing new.
We went skiing, I ate a hamburger and drank Powerade and watchedd a movie called „20.000 miles of underwater voyage” about captain Nemo and Willie Fogg.
Saturday 19.1.2008
Today we came back home. We ate a dinner-supper at a restaurant.
When we got home the hole family went to sleep, because we were all very sleepy.
Sunday 20.1.2008
Today we went to our friends. At our friends house we ate dinner. We talked, played games etc. We were back home at 5.00pm. We ate supper, read a little and went to sleep.
Monday 21.1.2008
Today my brother, my dad, my uncle, my uncle’s son and me, went swimming. I’m not a good swimmer, but I’m still training.
We went out at about 2.50pm. We got there at 3.35pm, we got in our swimsuits and went swimming at 3.45pm. I tried to do the kraul, but I didn’t do it very well. Dad did the breaststroke swim and did it very well, he’s a good swimmer. My uncle and his 8 year son did great krauls (they are great swimmers by the way) . We had a very good and happy time. It was very cool.
We went back at 4.30.
Then we didn’t have luck: because there were big, deep holes we got a flat tire! It took us an hour to put the spare tire on, because it was dark and we didn’t have a flashlight. Bad luck.
Because it was late, and because my uncle was a doctor, we drove him to work and he borrowed us a MP3 Player. It was a very nice and funny day.
Tuesday 22.1.2008
Today I went swimming again. But first, before we got to the swimming pool, we went to the car service to check the wheel that was a bit broken. At the service they told us that the tire and wheel are too broken too be used, so we can throw it away. Dad wasn’t happy (and who’s suprised about that?) .
We again got to the swimming pool at 3.35pm. We did the same things that we did last time. I still tried the kraul and I did it better than last time. We again went home by 4.30pm, but we didn’t get a flat tire this time. We got home at 5.15pm. I had supper, read a little and went to sleep.
Wednesday 23.1.2008
Today I didn’t do anything interesting. I just read books, played the piano, and played the computer. Nothing new. Just home obligations.
Thursday 24.1.2008
Today my whole family went to our friends in Chełm. We set off at 10.00. We had a good ride. At our friends’ house we had a very nice time: we talked, played computer games, ate sweets watched movies (for example „Lucky Luck”), read comics and other fun things. After all that, came 8.00pm and we had go to our house in Lublin.
But before we went home, we went to the store and bought some nuts and something to drink for the way. When we got home, we all went to sleep.
Friday 25.1.2008
Today nothing new. My parents and my brother went to the city to buy a present for Mark (my brother’s) friend. I stayed at home. I read books, played computer games, played with a ball and things like that.
Saturday 26.1.2008
Today our friends from Biłgoraj came to us. We played, read comics (for example „Thorgal”), played the computer in „Taxi” and did other cool things. It was very fun.
Sunday 27.1.2008
Today we just went to our friends. We didn’t do anything exiting.
Monday 28.1.2008
Today school started. The holidays ended. Nobody in our school is happy about that. Another week of’em would be good. Too bad. We’ll have to work again.
Matura is coming
30 October. The more you practise, the better you are =)
It’s 11 p.m. I’m exhausted. It was a terrible day. I woke up at 8 o’clock. I had been sitting at school for an hour and a half before I went to my friend. She is going to Scotland to her husband tomorrow, so I want to say goodbye to her. From 2 p.m. I learnt „WOS” for my extra lessons for three hours. It took me long but it was worthwhile. At 6.30 p.m. I went to a private school (our school) of English. Our group wrote a listening test. I wrote it badly L. It makes me sad and angry. But I always say àThe more you practise, the better you are J. After lessons my Dad picked me up and we went to Tesco to do some shopping. After that I only wanted to go to bed. And I’m about to do it. See you, my diary =*.
31 October. Halloween.
It’s 12 p.m. This day was quite nice. I sat at school for five hour. At Russian I got 3(a C) for my homework. I’m not very happy about this, but I will make it better soon. After lessons I went to a doctor, because I had to have some medical examinations, due to a stomach ache which I had last night. Then Dad picked me up and we went to the cemetery. Tomorrow is All Saints Day and I had to tidy my mother’s tomb. I wish that I lived in an English-speaking country, because today they have Halloween. It’s an interesting and funny holiday and I would happily take part in it. I was at home at 5 p.m. and I spent an hour cooking delicious dinner – Chinese food – yummy! I love it! Then I had a rest – I lay down for half an hour and then I started studying. I finally finished reading a book. It turned out quite interesting, but only in the second part of it… I wrote an essay about the text which I had read. Now I’m quite tired so I’m going to bed now. Bye, me diary.
1 November. All Saints’ Day
This was the day of memories and sadness. In Poland people go to cemeteries every 1 November. We want to show our respect for people who are dead. Everyone goes to their relatives’ tombs and lights ever-burning lights. I have a sentiment for this holiday. I always pray for my dead family, especially for my mother. I have been at the Majdanek cemetery, where my mother is buried. After that I went by bus to Parczew. During the trip I studied for my biology test next week. I went to Parczew because there are some family tombs there. After that I had a delicious dinner at my aunt’s. I spent about two hours there. At 5 p.m. I went with my two uncles to Białka, my grandmother lives. I am here now and I will stay the night here. I am watching TV and talking with my aunt. I’m tired and need to go to sleep - tomorrow I have to wake up early. See you, my diary.
2 November. Pyjamas
I woke up at 8. At 9.10 I took a bus and I was back to Lublin. Then I went shopping. I bought pyjamas. After shopping I went to the cemetery, because I wasn’t at my mother’s tomb yesterday. Then I went home. I spent half an hour cooking dinner. After dinner I relaxed for a while and then I did my homework for the whole following week. I’m watching a film lying on my now but I am so tired that I’m sure I’ll fall asleep soon. Bye.
3 November. Boring day
It was a boring day. I spent it at home. I slept until 1p.m. but for the next three hours I stayed in bed. I didn’t do anything interesting. I realised that there a terrible mess in the house so I cleaned it. Later I did some Matura tests. Now it’s 9p.m. In two hours’ time there is a funny comedy at telly and I’m going to watch it. But now I’m going to have a bath. It always makes me relax. I suppose that I’ll go to bed late. See you, diary.
4 November. Interesting day
This day was interesting. I was in church at 10a.m., then I went shopping. I bought a black skirt. It is nice. Then I went to my friends’. I was there for about two hours. After coming home I surfed the Internet for two hours looking for some smart shoes. Now I’m doing some English vocabulary and writing this diary J. At 8p.m. my friend Agata is coming to see me and we are going go to a restaurant for supper. When I come back home, I will probably go straight to bed. Bye
5 November. Headache L
Today I felt bad. I had a headache all day long. Besides, I had to write a lot of notes during lessons. After school I went home. After dinner I slept for two hours. I woke up and I’m doing some homework now, but I’m tired so I can’t think clearly. I’m going back to bed because I have to relax. Good bye.
6 November. Weakness.
I still feel bad. I woke up at 7a.m. and went to school in spite of being a bit off colour. But I couldn’t concentrate during the lessons. After that I had to sit at my extra WOS lessons for two hours. At 6.30p.m. I went to my English class(at our school). Thank God that my father picked me up because I was on my last legs. I still feel terrible. I’m going to bed now. See you.
7 November. Temperature
When I woke up I was running a temperature. I went to see my GP. She gave me tablets and a sick leave for two days. I slept all day. Now I’m writing this but I am still very weak so I’m lying in bad all the time. I’m reading a n obligatory book because I can’t waste my time. See you.
8 November . Feel better
I woke up at 12p.m. I had a good sleep. At 3p.m. I had my extra lessons in Polish and I got an A for my presentation. I’m very happay about that. Then I cooked dinner. At 8p.m. I went to bed but I didn’t sleep. I lay and read a book. It’s very interesting. I feel better at last. Bye, my diary.
9 November. Funny day
Today is Friday. I went to school because I feel all right. I wrote a maths test. From school I went to my friend’s for dinner. I had my favourite soup. It was delicious. From 6.30 till 8.00 I was at an English class(at our school. My friends picked me up and we went to a restaurant and to a pub, where we played billiards. Now it’s 2a.m. and I’m going to bed at last. It was a funny day. Bye, diary.
10 November . Snow
I always clean the house on Saturday so I had to do it also today. I cleaned for three hours. Then I had a bath. At 5p.m. I went shopping with Natalie. I bought beautiful shoes. Today, for the first time this year it snowed! All the town is white. It looks breathtaking. Now I’m at home. We are having some guests in, so I’m having fun. I will go to sleep late probably. See you.
11 November . Independence Day
Today is Poland’s Independence Day. I was in church at 10a.m. After that I went my grandfather’s for dinner. At 2p.m. my father picked me up and we came home. I wrote a book review for my English classes and did some homework for all following week. In the evening I went to the cinema with my friends. The film was fantastic. It’s called “A Mighty Hart”. I was at home at 11p.m. Good bye.
12 November. Matura is coming
I woke up at 6.30a.m. Then I sat at school for 5 hours. At 1a.m. I went to collect my passport with my dad. At 3 p.m. I had my extra Polish lessons. In the evening I learnt “WOS” because time is running out and Matura is coming. See you
13 November Life is very hard.
I hate Tuesdays. Five hours at school. At 2p.m I had my extra WOS lessons. The teacher was glad that I remembered some things. At 6.30 I had 2 hours of English. Now I’m at home. It’s 9.p.m. I am so tired that I can only go asleep. Life is very hard.
The Uluru Dream
15.05
I’m really excited and a bit embarrassed. We are going to Australia. We, that is my husband and me. Our son, Mateusz will be taking care of the dogs, the turtle and the plants at home. This journey is no longer just a dream. Rajmund applied for the visas two weeks ago by the internet. This morning he said: “We’ve got the visas!” It’s such a surprise! I remember queuing to the American Embassy for the visa only several years ago. I got it, but it wasn’t simple. Now you can get a visa by the internet. Incredible!
I haven’t got any itinerary, we haven’t booked the tickets yet, we haven’t got international driving licenses, we haven’t got …
18.05
I bought two Australian guidebooks today and I am constantly searching through the Internet for useful tips for travellers. Yesterday I found frightening news about flies. They are all over down under! Especially near deserts. Uluru, the Aborigines’ holy rock, the place that I’d like to see is in the middle of a desert. In the pictures I’ve never seen flies, only beautiful sunrises or sunsets. The Sun is very big, a fly is very small and you never see it in a photograph. Australians speak with half closed mouths because they are afraid of swallowing flies. This is the reason why Australian English is different from British English. I know this is stupid… but what, if is it true?
21.05
My friend Majka told me, I’ll need a device to scrape the windscreen of a car as it could be frozen August (!). Her sister Wieska lives near Melbourne and she keeps asking Majka to send her windscreen scrapers and Majka sends it summer after summer. Our summer. Majka also says that flies are horrible but cockroaches are even worse. They are very big and they are everywhere.
29.05
It isn’t dream! We are flying to OZ. I don’t know why true travellers call Australia the “OZ land” but it is very romantic. Rajmund bought tickets. By the Internet, naturally.
Getting an international driving license is not so easy. In the municipal office the computer system stores all my secret numbers: my PESEL, my ID number, the number of my driving license and probably there is also a scan of driving license with a photograph. I can buy a ticket to Australia by the Internet but in order to get this driving licence I must go to the office, complete a form, attach a recent paper photograph and pay cash. And of course wait for the clerk to eat her nice smelling ham and cucumber sandwich. That is life. I wonder what clerks in the Oz land are like. Probably the same.
1.06
We are leaving on 8th July at 7.30 in the morning from Okecie. Which means that I will start my journey from Lublin on the previous day at 7 p.m. 07.07.07. It is a nice number, isn’t it? At that time Rajmund will be coming back from Cambridge; he will change his suitcase in Warsaw and fly with me and aunt Jagoda to Australia. We are going to aunt Maryla (Jagoda’s sister), who has lived in Adelaide for more than 40 years. She was a real heroine – she went to Australia from a small Polish village, she spoke only Polish, she did not have any money, no profession, and no education. But she was very brave, like Dorotka from “The Wizard of OZ”. Two months ago her husband Walus died… He was brave too; he was an Anders Army soldier and came to Australia after II World War. He was a miner and then a flat owner.
04.06
A year ago I received this 2006/2007 School Year Calendar with a map of Australia and New Zealand. I thought it would be a wonderful journey to the Antipodes. Journeys are like universities without walls and now I will learn a lot about kangaroos, ostriches, crocodiles, parrots, deserts, vineyards. What should I see in Australia? How should I plan the trip? What means of transport should we choose: a train, a car or a bus? Sometimes (in vineyards) it would be good to be riding a bicycle, but if we rent a car, we should pay twice: for the car and for the bikes. I am trying to think about my job, but I can only work like a robot.
16.06
We got ourselves the International Teacher Identity Card and the Youth Hostel Association Card (for seniors). This is a most peculiar idea - people get starved or they kill themselves with exhausting workout to keep looking young and here you can buy the right to be part of the young generation. This card, just like the Inernational Driving Licence, is just a cheap looking hand-written piece of paper. Wonder if they accept that in the Oz land?
22.06.
We have finished another school year at EUROlink. The Silver Spoon Theatre gave a typically captivating performance. Well, this school is a magic place where emotions bubble like in Shakespearean witches' cauldron. In a few years' time when our students set out their journey to the Oz land (wherever that may be) I hope they will remember us. One of them, together with his wife and kids, is going this year to Australia. Forever. Pity.
02.07
It's been a hard day. In Warsaw Hilton Hotel me and almost a thousand other people from Poland and the rest of Europe were celebrating the 50-th anniversary of the European Social Fund and the EU in general. Sixty representatives, me in that number, from educational institutions and government organisations were honoured with the title of the "Good ESF Practice" Award laureate for the "Best Investment in the Human Resources". I felt deepley touched for a moment but soon afterwards I started getting jumpy thinking that I was wasting my time celebrating when there is so much work to do before the journey. I left without waiting for the banquet at the Hilton.
07.07.07
See you later, Alligator…
Crocodiles?
A diary of an IT specialist-to-be
23.03 Friday
The first day in my diary. I was convinced to write it this afternoon after my English lesson. As nothing special happened today I don’t have the slightest idea what to write about. That’s why this day’s page remains blank.
24.03 Saturday
Saturday - the first day of the weekend. It was supposed to be cold and windy but it isn’t so maybe the weather forecast was wrong. Today there was an interesting lecture at the Institute of Physics at UMCS. Although the title was “From mummies to Integrated circuit” it turned out to be about X-ray diffraction analysis and X-ray fluorescence analysis which are modern ways to determine the age of old objects.
25.03 Sunday
“K8055” is what I can call this day. It’s the name of an external USB interface devise which can enable people to understand and be able to control, for example, your house using your own computer J. It’s a long and complicated story. In short, I’m trying to code a program which will turn the lights on/off, open doors or control air conditioning. It’s great fun for someone like me. Maybe I will even add a speech recognition feature?
26.03 Monday
Nothing interesting happened today except a beautiful morning dew and the installation of Vista on my computer. And I can tell that my computer likes the new software J.
27.03 Tuesday
My sister’s birthday J. Straight after school I went on Krakowskie Przedmieście Street to find something suitable for her. Finally I’ve found something perfect in a little souvenir shop – a little blue glass elephant with chains and a goblet in which you can keep some aromatic oil.
28.03 Wednesday
At last I came back to one of my favourite games – Gothic 3. An unnamed hero has come by ship to the land of Myrtana. When he shows up, there’re always lots of things going on. This time I will have to free “Morra” from the orc’s occupation. My entire family (maybe except my mother) loves this game. We can talk about the places and quests for hours while having lunch.
29.03 Thursday
The day of the Worms. I thought about the etymology of this word and now I think that it originates from the word “war”. The little creatures that fight… War => creatures that make war => Worm => plural Worms => The Worms J. Of course I don’t think about worms as animals – it’s the name of the game which I like very much. That’s why, as it didn’t look very hard to me, I decided to build this game for my mobile phone. And today I added a bazooka and the second worm.
30.03 Friday
German, History, Polish and the lesson called WOS (Social Studies) and Physics. If it wasn’t for the last one, the day would have been hopeless.
We are planning to build a virtual gauss gun with my friend. It is the weapon that fires nails which is activated by a an impulse electromagnetic field. A good plan for one weekend or two.
31.03 Saturday
Today I got up early in the morning. Straight from bed I got into my car and went to WAMnO – “Wiosenne Akademickie Marsze na Orientację” (Spring Academic Orientation March). WAMnO is a contest in which you have to find the way, usually in a forest. It’s divided into 3 stages, which are 3 different routes. I have set off with my sister and we managed to win the first leg. In the second we were the fourth but in the overall classification we were still holding the first position. The third leg, which usually is the hardest one, started with the twilight. Fortunately, we had a good start.
01.04 Sunday
The day after yesterday became immediately after midnight but I didn’t notice this at once. I was still en route trying to find another control point in a pitch-dark forest.
We came back to the base camp at about 3 am and I went straight to bed.
And I did sleep well.
And I did sleep a long time.
02.04 Monday
I’m terrified of my school-leaving exanimations, especially the presentation in Polish. Today I handed in the bibliography for my presentations,. It was terrible. I haven’t got much time left and I still have no idea how my presentation should look. I thought I would go to bed with these bad thoughts… Fortunately, an old friend reminded me of herself and the night started very late…
From the Diary of a Junior Doctor
10.02.2007
My daughter Agatha had her first ball at school. She is fifteen and she attends the third class of junior-high school. We had been preparing for this day for a long time. We bought a beautiful dress - black with silver spots, smart black shoes and a transparent scarf. Wearing it all she looked wonderful.
I went to school with Agatha, because I was keen to see her dancing polonaise. It was really touching to the quick watching my daughter and her friends, all looking smart and grown up. I came back home with tears in my eyes. I was a very proud mother then.
11.02.2007
This was the one of the few Sundays that I don't have to work on. Usually I have duties in hospital on Sundays. So I was having a rest. My daughter had to go to school to clean the gym hall after the ball. She went there with pleasure, because she was in high spirits and she wanted to meet her friends again.
12.02.2007
Back to work. Again the same problems: a large number of patients, few places in hospitals, shortages of doctors and nurses. We have to grapple with the lack of funds all the time. Patients demand to be treated on a good level, as they can see it on television. We can't give it to them because there is one doctor and two nurses on duty for the whole department. So we must cope with the cool or angry reception from the sick people.
13.02.2007
It is amazing that so many patients after treatment in hospital don't want to go home. They invent various ailments to be kept in hospital for a longer time. I think they are anxious about feeling lonely and helpless at home. How sad it is.
14.02.2007
Today I am on my duty on the internal diseases ward. I obtained an official letter from manager of the hospital in the morning. It said that I was in charge of organizing the Hospital Rescue Ward work during my duty on the internal diseases ward. It irritated me so much. Am I Father Pio? Only he could appear in two places at the same time. I know that there is a lack of funds and workers in hospital but this has gone too far. I wrote to the manager informing him that I can't take responsibility for working in two wards at the same time.
15.02.2007
I have been working all day and night on both wards. I’m very tired, but who cares about it? I will be able to go home when I have examined all my patients. It takes time till noon. So it turns out I worked for 28 hours non-stop. Is it normal?
16.02.2007
It is my last day at work before a short holiday. I have been dreaming about having a rest for a long time. I’ve planned to go skiing in Slovakia with my daughter and some friends. So now I have only to finish work with my patients and at about 3 p.m. I’m free!
Now only some last-minute shopping and packing and our journey can start.
17.02.2007
We started with a small delay and we reached Vratna Dolina in the evening. Our group takes up all the rooms in the bed-and-breakfast. I share the room with Agatha it’s very small, but fortunately it has a bathroom.
We went to sleep after a big supper in the restaurant – Slovaks have very tasty but greasy cuisine.
18.02.2007
We were gathering our ski equipment from the early morning. At last (about 10 o’clock) we reached The Kubinska Hola Ski Center. It is a beautiful place with high mountains surrounding us, but there is not too much snow for comfortable skiing. My skiing skills are not perfect, so I’m a little bit afraid of this day
19.02.2007
Yesterday the conditions for skiing were really difficult. Today we are going to The Vratna Dolina Ski Center. The place is even more beautiful than Kubinska Hola.
We went up tn the top of Mount Grun and we saw wonderful scenery.
Unfortunately, the weather was not very good. And there wasn’t enough snow.
Despite this, however, today skiing was very nice.
20.02.2007
Today we went to Rajeckie Teplice to have some fun in a spa. It is a rather grand place with crystal chandeliers and marle floors. But the prices are lower than in Polish spas. We spent about two hours in the swimming pools and saunas. After this I had a massage for my painful back.
21.02.2007
I must have eaten something bad in my meal yesterday because I ‘m feeling sick now. I stayed at home all day sleeping and reading my books.
My friends went skiing again. I hope they had a good time. They visited me in the evening and we spent a very nice time drinking wine, feeling fine…
22.02.2007
I still did not feel well enough to go skiing, so instead I went for a walk. The mountains are beautiful (it is not the first time I’ve mentioned it). They are so majestic, and yet so peaceful that I’ve confided my secrets to them and I immediately felt much better.
23.02.2007
I feel fine today. We are going skiing in The Martinskie Hole – another Slovakian ski center. It is situated at 1300 metres above sea level so there is enough snow there, I hope.
After a long drive we could find that we were right – finally we were able to ski in good conditions. The routes were well prepared and the weather was good.
24.02.2007
It is amazing but our holidays are over. We have to go back home. What a pity!
But what can we do? Goodbye Slovakia! See you next year, I hope.
Before crossing the border we bought some sweets and bottles of beer.
The journey was quite nice. After travelling 450 km we have reached Lublin safely.
